Tesla to Use SpaceX for Managing Large Amount of Data
Tesla Inc., an American electric automaker, could use a broadband
network that is developed by SpaceX to securely handle the huge amount of data
needed to manage autonomous vehicles, according to an analyst.
Self-driving vehicles produce and consume extremely huge amounts
of data, Adam Jonas, a Morgan Stanley analyst, stated.
Jonas estimated that autonomous cars could produce 40 terabytes of
data in just an hour.
“How will Tesla manage such a large quantity of data?” stated
Jonas. “In our opinion, leveraging the broadband network provided by its very
own sister company seems like a plausible answer.”
In turn, the self-driving automaker could be a “captive customer”
for SpaceX, which is developing the broadband network with the use of
satellites.
Tesla, on the other hand, did not give any comment about the
matter.
Meanwhile, whether or not the automaker will be able to achieve
the full self-driving technology is still an open question.
However, Tesla is already equipping every vehicle it makes with
hardware CEO Elon Musk stating that it is sufficient for full autonomy. Musk also
stated that vehicles would eventually be capable of fully autonomous over the
upgrades of its software.
Autopilot Chief Engineer of Tesla Exits
Jim Keller, the autopilot chief engineering of Tesla, has left the
electric car company last week for Intel. He joined the self-driving automaker
two years ago with background knowledge in chip development.
Meanwhile, the Palo Alto, California-based company had a
challenging first quarter. Tesla posted its biggest quarterly loss yet in
February, and another Autopilot-related fatality occurred last month, but this
time it involves a Model X.
The production of Model 3, on the other hand, was temporarily
halted this month to address bottlenecks.
However, the responsibilities of Keller, which includes
low-voltage hardware, autopilot software and infotainment, will be divided.
Pete Bannon, who has been with Tesla for more than two years, will
be in charge of the autopilot hardware, while Andrej Karpathy, Tesla director
of Al and autopilot vision, will be handling the autopilot software.
Back in March, the development of self-driving vehicles took a hit
with the fatality of a pedestrian involving an Uber test car. The accident has
led to the suspension of test programs in Arizona.
