Apple Inc. Employs the Artificial Intelligence Chief of Google
Apple Inc. has hired John Giannandrea, the chief of search and
artificial intelligence of Google, a major achievement in its bid to catch up to the artificial intelligence
technology of its competitors.
On Tuesday, Apple announced that Giannandrea would run the company’s
“machine learning and A.I. strategy.” He will also become one of the 16
executives who will report directly to Timothy D. Cook, Apple’s chief
executive.
“Our technology must be infused with the values we all hold dear,”
Cook stated. “John shares our commitment to privacy and our thoughtful approach
as we make computers even smarter and more personal.”
Meanwhile, as Apple become the world’s most valuable publicly
traded company on the back of its iPhone, many people in the technology
industry consider Siri, Apple’s digital assistant, to be less effective compared
to its counterparts at Amazon and Google.
Giannandrea helped lead the push to integrate A.I. throughout the
products of Google, such as internet search, Gmail, and Google Assistant.
He joined Google back in 2010 when the company bought Metaweb, a
start-up where he served as chief technology officer. Metaweb was constructing what
it described as a “database of the world’s knowledge,” which Google used into
its search engine to answer the queries of its consumers.
During Giannandrea term, A.I. research became increasingly
important inside Google, with its primary A.I. lab, Google Brain, moving into a
space beside the chief executive, Sundar Pichai.
Meanwhile, Apple has made other high-profile hires in the field,
including Russ Salakhutdinov, a professor at Carnegie Mellon. He studied at the
University of Toronto under Geoffrey Hinton, who helps oversee the Google Brain
lab.
Apple Plans to Use its Own Chips in 2020
Apple is planning to use its own chips in Mac computers starting
in early 2020, replacing processors from Intel Corporation.
According to the people familiar with the plan, the initiative,
known as Kalamata, is still in early developmental stages, but comes as part of
a larger strategy to make all of Apple devices work more similarly and seamlessly
together.
The project, which was already approved by executives, will most
likely to result in a multi-step transition.
Meanwhile, the plan of Apple would be a blow to Intel, who helped
revive Apple’s Mac success and linked the chip-maker to one of the leading
brands in electronics.
Apple provides Intel with 5 percent of its annual revenue.
