Walmart Inc. Removes Cosmo from its Checkout Lines
Walmart Inc. will be removing Cosmopolitan Magazines from all of
the checkout lines of the retail giant.
According to Walmart, this move was a “business decision” but one advocacy
group is touting as a victory against sexual exploitation.
Cosmopolitan describes itself as a “bible for fun, fearless
females that reaches more than 18 million readers a month.” When it was just
starting, the magazine made a splash with its provocative covers and sex advice
for its readers. The magazine has been critiqued for tying its racier content with
young actors on its covers.
Walmart has stated that it “will
continue to offer Cosmopolitan to customers that wish to purchase the magazine,
but it will no longer be located in the checkout aisles.”
“While this was primarily a business decision, the concerns raised
were heard,” the retail giant said.
Meanwhile, National Center on Sexual Exploitation, an advocacy group,
said that the decision was victory against “Cosmo's hyper sexualized and
degrading article titles.”
Walmart, on the other hand, did not give any comment whether the
sales of the magazine were declining.
Walmart Teams Up with FedEx
Walmart will be opening FedEx shops for packing, printing, and
shipping services in its 500 U.S. stores.
The retail giant and the courier delivery services company have
been testing the partnership in about 50 locations in Colorado, North Carolina,
South Carolina, and Texas. After a successful pilot program, both companies
revealed that it would add the services to another 500 sites.
According to the officials of the company, customers can now hold their
packages at the Walmart FedEx shops for up to five business days.
Meanwhile, the shops are about 450 to 750 square feet and there
will be almost 2,000 FedEx workers in the stores.
“The new FedEx office locations in Walmart Supercenters are chosen
by a number of factors including available space, local population numbers and
proximity to other FedEx Office stores. At this time, we do not have additional
details to share on exactly where those 500 stores will be,” stated the spokesperson
of the company.
