Boeing Cancels Out Plans to Revive 767 Passenger Jet
On Monday, Boeing Co. announced that the company and its executives have ruled out any plans of bringing back its 767 passenger jet. This was announced by Boeing commercial marketing vice president Randy Tinseth. According to Tinseth who faced reporters in a conference call that day that the company is not seeing plans on bringing back the passenger version of the 767.
For the past couple of months, speculations have arised regarding the revival of the 767 wide-body passenger line. This would allow Boeing to offer a low-price backstop to airlines should a delay be experienced in the proposal of brand new mid-market planes. This was also expected to allow Boeing in offering an alternative should its ongoing projects and new proposals be cancelled.
One of Boeing’s ongoing productions is the New Mid-market Aircraft (NMA) which will be available in the market in the next ten years. The New Market Aircraft has the potential to carry around 220 to 270 passengers with a range of as much as 5,000nm. The proposal reports of the 767 revival was set to be an alternative should the NMA project face some delays.
This comes after the American company faced competition from European aircraft manufacturer for the replacement of the 757 and the 767 in the market as it delivers its first A321LR this year which will be competing with 757s that travel transatlantic as well as some airlines. Airlines such as United and American have reportedly been putting into replacing their fleet of 767s with the A330-800neo. The A330-800neo is expected to become available in the market by 2019.
However, Boeing have stated that the NMA’s potential buyers and clients have stated their willingness to wait for the entry-into-service of the said aircraft by as late as 2025. Some of the potential customers of the NMA include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. Delta chief executive Ed Bastian have been reported to have told pilots back in February that the airline company intends to launch the new aircraft.
Last August 2017, reports have suggested resuming the 767 production. This was followed by executives announcing last November that a passenger variant production being resumed is amongst their options as it pushes the production of the 767 military and freighter versions. Boeing chief executive officer Dennis Muilenburg have also previously stated that there is a broad customer interest in the 767 aside from its military and freighter versions. While the option has been ruled out by the company, there is no current concerns regarding the upcoming New Mid-market Aircraft facing longer delays than expected.
