U.S. Lawmakers Show Concern about the Facebook Data Leak
On Sunday, some U.S. lawmakers voiced out their concern over
privacy violations after media reports said that a political consultancy that worked
on the campaign of U.S. President Donald Trump gained access to the data of 50
million Facebook users.
According to Republican Senator Marco Rubio, he thinks that
several internet companies have developed too fast to digest their obligations
and responsibilities.
“So we'll learn more about this in the days to come. But yeah I'm
disturbed by that,” stated Rubio.
Meanwhile, someone asked Senator Rand Paul if people could trust
internet companies like Facebook after the report about Cambridge Analytica
taking data.
“People have to look into it. Whether or not it broke the law,
absolutely, the privacy of the American consumer, the American individual,
should be protected,” said Paul.
Last Friday, Facebook had disclosed the issue in a blog post, just
a few hours before media reports that Cambridge Analytica was given access to
the data and may not have deleted it.
According to the statement of the social media company, a
psychology teacher from Cambridge University had lied to Facebook and had
violated the policies of the company by sending the data to Cambridge Analytica.
The firm is currently suspended from the social media company.
Facebook did not give any response to the comments of the
lawmakers. However, the media reports said that Cambridge Analytica and the
professor have denied violating the terms of Facebook.
Facebook New Music Licensing Agreements
Facebook has made three new music-licensing deals that will allow its users post songs from singers, such as Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, and Neil
Young.
These new agreements will cover user-generated content on
Facebook, as well as its own messaging apps and its virtual reality unit,
Oculus.
The social media giant has secured the licenses to the music of
Sacem, the French collections group, Socan, the Canadian rights group with
clients, such as The Weekend, and Wixen Music Publishing.
However, Facebook and the music companies have not yet disclosed
any financial details of their agreement.
