Data Center Plans Worth $1 Billion Cancelled By Apple on Delays

On Thursday, Apple Inc has announced that is has cancelled its plans to build a data center in Ireland due to delays in the process and approval of the project which has delayed the project already for more than three years.

The project which was originally planned to cost around 850 million euros or $1 billion has been back in February 2015 initially included plans to build a data center in the rural western town of Athenry which will allow the company to take advantage of green energy sources nearby the area. However, planning appeals held by two officials have reportedly delayed the approval of the project.

In October, the High Court of Ireland ruled that building the data center can proceed which would dismiss the appeals of the said individuals who have brought their case to the supreme court of Ireland.

According to Apple, the company would not be able to move forward with the data center despite their best efforts due to the delays in the approval process which has led to the company making other plans. Apple also stated that the setback faced by the company will not dampen their enthusiasm for future projects in the country as their businesses continue to grow.

Apple also announced that is is planning to expand its headquarters in Europe in Country Cork where the company is known to have employed more than 6,000 people. The country is known for its reliance on foreign multinational companies including Apple to create as much as one job out of ten across the country’s economy.

The country is also known for depending on major investments including data centers for securing its presence in the country. Currently, the country’s government is on the process of changing its planning laws which would include data centers as strategic infrastructure which will allow them to plan processes on a much faster rate.

Heather Humphreys, Ireland’s Minister for Business and Enterprise stated that there is no disputing on how disappointing the decision of Apple was especially for Athenry and added that the government did everything it could to be able to support the said investment. Humphreys also added that delays have underlined the need to make their planning and legal processes more efficient.

The data center to be built in China is part of its plan to comply with a new law in the country requiring companies to store data from their users inside the country.

Apple is planning to build the data center in Guizhou where around $1 billion is being planned by the company to be able to invest in the province located in China’s southwest part. A local data management company is also being planned to be opened by Apple in the area.
