EU to Impose New Anti-Speeding Tech

The European Union will require new cars produced from 2022 to be fitted with anti-speeding technology. This device, the Intelligent Speed Assistance or ISA, will regulate speed and make it impossible for vehicles to go above the speed limit. The ISA will use GPA and other available technologies to map vehicle location and their speed limit information.

European Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska stated that 25,000 people are killed each year on the roads of Europe, and most of these cases are caused by human error.

"With the new advanced safety features that will become mandatory, we can have the same kind of impact as when the safety belts were first introduced," Bieńkowska added.

“Many of the new features already exist in high-end vehicles. Now we raise the safety level across the board and pave the way for connected and automated mobility of the future.”
A recent survey of British drivers, which had 2,000 drivers as respondents, was conducted and found that nine out of 10 drivers agree to the implementation of these features and the new technology.

“This is a landmark day for road safety. These measures will provide the biggest leap forward for road safety this century, perhaps even since the introduction of the seat belt,” said Joshua Harris, director of campaigns for Brake.

“The Government must commit to adopting these lifesaving regulations, no matter what happens with Brexit, with a recent Brake and Direct Line report finding that 9 in 10 UK drivers wanted car safety standards in the UK to remain at least as high as those in the EU, post-Brexit,” he added.

However, despite the efforts for awareness, some people still disagreed.

The president of the Automotive Association, Edmund King, argued, "The right speed is often below the speed limit, for example, outside a school with children around, but with ISA there may be a temptation to go at the top speed allowed which may not be appropriate.”

"Sometimes a little speed also helps to keep safe on the road, for example, overtaking a tractor on a country road or joining a motorway," he added.

The new rule is now awaiting to be approved by the European Parliament.
